What is a Mexican Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit?

Learn what a temporary vehicle importation permit is and why you need one.

U.S. and Canadian citizens, as well as Mexican citizens living abroad, need a Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit (TIP) to drive their vehicles into Mexico beyond the free or border zone. This permit is required for travelers with FMM status, Temporary Residents, Temporary Resident Students, and Mexican citizens residing abroad.

The permits can only be obtained through Banjercito, the official Mexican issuing authority.

How does the TIP work in the Free Zone

The "Free Zone" or "Border Zone" in Mexico allows foreign vehicles to be driven without a Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit (TIP). This area generally includes up to 25 kilometers from the border, all of Baja California Peninsula, and Quintana Roo. In Sonora, a "Sonora Only Vehicle Permit" is available for travel within specific limits west of Highway 15 and north of KM 98.

If traveling outside these areas, a TIP is required and can be obtained from Banjercito. You can apply online between 10 and 60 days before your trip or at border entry points. The permit, suitable for vehicles under 3.5 metric tons, is valid for up to 180 days. Motorhomes can secure a 10-year RV TIP. Note that vehicle permits cannot be obtained at internal checkpoints, except at the La Paz ferry terminal with a valid FMM.
